Our History

Every successful organization usually has a Founder who goes to great lengths to get things started and we were fortunate to have Joanne Millichamp lead the way for our Club.

Joanne was previously the President of the Combined PROBUS Club of North Oakville. When she and Ron moved to Milton in 2011, they tried to join the Milton PROBUS Club only to be told they were no longer taking new members. Joanne decided to start a new club and after a lot of hard work and obstacles she was able to get things off the ground. In October 2013, 98 people showed up for the first meeting at Hugh Foster Hall and the Escarpment PROBUS Club was born. Due to the over 70 confirmed members that signed up, they immediately had to find an alternate meeting place, and were able to secure a hall at the Milton Sports Centre starting in January 2014. Tributes go out to the original management group of Joanne and Ron Millichamp, Cliff and Liz Read, Michelle and Jim  Tschirhart, Jeanne Reid, Joanne Sutman, Martin Capper, Alan Jordan, and Lorrette Shermet.

In October 2023 our club celebrated the 10th anniversary since our founding with a wonderful luncheon. For those of us who have been with our club since its inception we have enjoyed many memorable events and activities over this period of time.

Probus was created primarily as a social club to provide fellowship and opportunity for development of acquaintance and our club has more than lived up to that goal. When we started out we only had a few social activities every month; 2 book clubs, 2 nosh groups, euchre, bridge, a garden club and a lunch group. 10 years later we have expanded to more than 30 interest groups available for our members to enjoy including many types of card games, Trivia nights, wine tasting, Joker, whiskey tasting and international travel to name only a few. In addition our Activities team ensures that every year we enjoy visits to places of interest in the community as well as theatre outings, concerts and many other events. And lets not forget our 3 annual events, the Summer Picnic, the Anniversary Dinner/Dance and the Christmas Luncheon. Our monthly meetings are always interesting and over the last 10 years we have enjoyed a vast range of speakers on many different topics.

Probus offers us all social connections and relationships, which are so important at this stage of life. Our motto: Live - Learn - Laugh speaks for itself.
